Lincoln’s Tomb, Springfield IL

It has been a while since I visited Lincoln’s tomb, and I happened to be in the area, so I paid it a visit. Unfortunately there were some renovations being done so the balcony was closed, but the interior was still open.

A few interesting tidbits –

Oak Ridge Cemetery is the second most visited cemetery in the United States. The first is Arlington National cemetery in Washington D.C.

The monument was completed in 1874 and stands 117 feet tall.

The four bronze statues around the monument represent the four branches of the military at that time. Infantry, Artillery, Calvary, and Navy.

Inside the entrance, in the receiving room, is a bronze prototype of the Lincoln Memorial statue in Washington.

After an attempted theft of his body in 1876, President Lincoln was reburied 10 feet below ground. His body is sealed inside a wood box, wrapped in a steel cage, and covered over with Portland cement. On top of that rests the 7 ton piece of marble that bears his name.

If you’ve never been here I highly recommend it.
